The total of eight U.S. based DHA manufacturers were chosen, and the Pristine DHA ranked #1 as the cleanest, and least contaminated DHA oil among the rest. One of largest manufacturer came in last. After using Pristine DHA for approximately one week I started noticing a softening of my skin. You can think of DHA as food for the brain because numerous studies have shown that DHA is essential in maintaining mental sharpness. The multitude of cells in the brain, retina and other pads of the nervous system have billions of arms connected to their membranes which transport electrical signals as messages between cells throughout the body. When there are sufficient levels of DHA, the arms maintain flexibility allowing for precise and efficient cell communications. On the contrary, if DHA levels in the blood are inadequate, the arms transporting the messages harden and the transmission of signals between the cells is slowed or prevented, which may lead to brain disorders. The neurological dysfunctions that have been associated with lower levels of DHA are altered disposition, memory loss, visual impairment, depression, dementia, alzheimer's, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis and aggression. Some studies showed as the DHA levels increased, the disorder dramatically decreased. Ample quantities of DHA is especially important for aging adults in providing essential brain nutrients to prevent neurological deterioration that occurs with age.

    Get your fat from fish
Last but not least, get your fat from fish, not from red meats. The fats in fish, called omega-3 fatty acids, lower heart-disease risk, stimulate the immune system and might even reduce the incidence of depression. In a study published in this month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers from the University of Barcelona found that "fish-lovers" have a significantly reduced rate of colorectal, esophageal, stomach and pancreatic cancers. Even small amounts of fish were found to lower risk for cancers of the digestive tract. The researchers speculate that the fatty acids found in fish may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Source Environmental Nutrition 1996 Feb;19(2):1,4 Abstract Recent studies offer a glimmer of hope that diet changes may offer relief from rheumatoid arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils, long touted for their ability to protect against heart disease, may also reduce the symptoms of arthritis - probably via their effects on prostaglandins (inflammation-fighting substances). Salmon, sardines, anchovies, tuna, mackerel and bluefish are good omega-3 sources. Studies of omega-6 fatty acids, found in borage seed oil, evening primrose oil, and plant seeds show promise, but more research is needed to determine safe, effective doses. An adequate intake of antioxidants and other nutrients - particularly beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium may be important to prevent rheumatoid arthritis.

The Diet We May All One Day Adopt

It's not how much fat you eat that counts, it's what kind of fat.

That's the word from the Harvard School of Public Health. Protect your heart and live longer by watching the kind of fat you eat and piling on more fish, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Reporting in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Harvard team reviewed nearly 150 studies that showed this dietary strategy was the best way for us to protect ourselves from the ravages of heart disease. Confused? It's not surprising. Some experts insist a high-fat diet is the best form of nutrition. Others say only low-fat will do. Meanwhile, most major dietary guidelines say restrict the fat in your diet to 30 percent. Come on! How do you measure THAT?

WebMD reports that if you follow the advice from Harvard, you can stop worrying about fat and do this instead: 1. Replace saturated and trans fats with unsaturated fats, especially polyunsaturated fat. (Learn to read labels.) 2. Eat more foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, soybeans, and canola oil. 3. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Limit the amount of refined grains you eat.

Lead study author Frank Hu, who is an associate professor of nutrition at Harvard, insists that no single diet is ideal for everyone; however, he told WebMD that combining these three approaches listed above can have a dramatic impact on reducing heart disease. "Stringent criteria for total fat resulted in a low-fat campaign, and this actually backfired," Hu explained to WebMD. "The public began eating more refined carbohydrates and sugars, and it may have something to do with the current increases in obesity and diabetes we're seeing."

Even the American Heart Association agrees. It has removed fat limits from its dietary guidelines. Instead, the AHA has placed its emphasis on limiting saturated fats, which are found in animal products, and trans fats, which are found in processed snack foods.

WebMD offers some tasty ways to eat the good fat and cut out the bad fat: • Skip the margarine or butter on your bread and instead dip it in olive oil. • Cook with soy, canola, or corn oils. • When you must use margarine, use the softer ones that come in tubs instead of sticks. • Eat red meat in moderation. • Don't eat processed meat products, such as bacon and sausage. • When you eat pork and poultry, be sure to trim away the fat and skin. • Choose whole grain carbohydrates. This includes whole wheat bread, oatmeal, and popcorn. Skip the white bread, bakery products, and pasta. • Eat two or more servings of fish every week. (Just doing this will lower your risk of heart disease by 30 percent, according to the American Heart Association.)
